Out of humble beginnings.....
The story behind the sculpture of "The Resurrection Cross" is an unusual one.
It begins in the Spring of 2009 when our trusty old Compact vacuum cleaner suddenly decided to work no more. Now Don is a very creative person and also very handy and so into Peterborough we went in search of the replacement parts that would bring our vacuum back to life. We found our way to Peterborough Vacuum and there we met the extremely personable Camille Parent. Now Camille is a very friendly man and while discussing what parts we needed the conversation turned to what kind of work that we did. When he discovered that Don was a sculptor he suggested that we get in touch with the Catholic Education Centre as they were thinking of having some sculptures moved from The Mount St. Joseph's to their new headquarters on Lansdowne Street West. So Don contacted Mr. John Mackle the Director of Education, went and took a look at the pieces and reported back on what he felt would be the best way to move them successfully. It was during this conversation that it was discovered that the Catholic Education Centre was potentially interested in having something made for the front of the building to help people find them more readily and to also show the fact that it was a Catholic Education Centre. They wanted something distinctive, easily recognizable and aesthetically pleasing. It was at this moment that Don received what can only be described as an Epiphany as the entire image of a large stainless steel cross with the image of Christ cut out of the center just suddenly popped complete into his head. He created a few initial maquettes in order to see the concept and it was then that the entire enormity of the Cross that portrayed both the crucified AND the risen body of Christ became apparent. The image of the body of Christ cut out of the Cross managed to bring together both of these ideas in one beautiful image. When the maquettees were presented to the Board of Directors the reaction was overwhelmingly positive, the project was accepted and the rest is, as they say.... history.
We would like to sincerely thank Mr. John Mackle and the Board of Directors for providing us with this once in a life time opportunity to create a piece of art of such significance. We have been humbled by the response to the sculpture and consider the whole project to have been something of a very special gift.

"this CROSS will remind us and the wider community that our Catholic Schools and Catholic Education Centre are filled with hope, where collectively, the Catholic Virtues we celebrate each month fuel our actions and remind the world we dance in the light of the resurrection."
